Good Fins was born out of two things:
A real need I felt as a surfer — wanting better control and flow by fine-tuning my fin setups.
A gut feeling that others were quietly tweaking fins too, but had no clear way to customise or experiment.
So I set out to build a brand and MVP that let people custom design surfboard fins — and have your creation shipped to your door.
Timeline
3 Weeks for everything — design, dev, testing, fin prototyping
This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development, testing, and optimization phases.
Landing Page
Designed and shipped the Good Fins homepage using Framer. It introduces the idea, shows some renders, and offers a quick hook: “Design your own fin.”
Product Customiser
For the actual fin builder, I used Vercel’s v0 AI dev tool to rapidly scaffold a working interface. No-frills, just enough to let people experiment with shapes, sizes, and leave feedback.
Feedback Loop
I embedded a Typeform survey directly in the customiser, asking one key thing:
👉 “Would you actually ride this fin?”
The goal was to learn fast and iterate if needed.
Fin Prototyping
Once I had some promising shapes, we manufactured multiple prototypes to experiment with design and construction. These were tested in small, clean surf to assess the drag, drive, and feel. Some fins worked ok. Some felt magic. But that’s part of the fun.
Fin R&D
Rigorous testing of prototypes with Carbon Fibre materials and use in field
More Options
Expand the customiser to include rake & foil options along with additional models
Launch
Start limited runs of local production for early adopters
Here, the outcomes and achievements of the project are highlighted, including user feedback, adoption rates, and industry recognition.
Bro Code
The combo of no-code + AI tools + real-world testing is underrated.
Get. It. Done.
Don't overbuild — build just enough to learn.
